The Whippet is an old breed having been developed by the miners in the north of England for hunting small game such as rabbits to supplement the family's meager larder. The rabbits and hares were often poached from the local Lord's estate! Later, racing became popular- an activity in which the Whippet excels. It wasn't until much later that the breed was seen in the show ring. The first Whippet champion was UK Ch Zuber who was born in 1889 and is considered the father of the breed throughout the world.
My first Whippet was McLean. Bought as a pet, he introduced me to the obedience world and he later became New Zealand's first Whippet with an obedience degree. He not only did well in obedience, but also was a keen participant in tracking until a shoulder injury meant that he could no longer cope with the scale jump. I expect the injury occurred when landing from the scale which he insisted in jumping as if it were a clear jump! He was also a very keen, if slow, racing dog. However, the love of his life, apart from slobbing out in my bed from dawn to dawn, was hunting rabbits. He was my first ever dog and will never be forgotten.
